A ceramic arts project developed with reception age children (4/5 years old) using flora as inspiration.
Children were asked to look at plants and flowers and their forms and visually interpret them to make a set of tiles using two different making techniques. The first technique involved pressing flowers in to clay, which were then cut in to tiles, fired and glazed to accentuate the plant details. For the second making technique the children drew plants on paper using felt tips, colouring pencils and crayons. These drawings were then made in to ceramic decal transfers and fired on to blank tiles. The combination of the two visual interpretations of flora, both the imprinted flora and the children’s drawings of flowers, were placed side by side and assembled as tile panels for the school.
